Ayurvedic medicine is gaining popularity as a complementary way to help protect and improve your wellness. It is a wonderful system which can help people with all kinds of different medical problems, but it is not necessarily the easiest route to take. In order to see the full benefits to your wellbeing, you need to be patient and have faith in the system, however unconventional it may seem. You also need to be willing to drink medicines that taste unpleasant and bitter, at times.
One of the main benefits to the ayurvedic system is that there are virtually no side effects, even when the treatment is for something quite major.
G. G. Gangadharan is physician of Ayurvedic medicine and is also the medical director at I-AIM and he points out that Ayurveda is a holistic science and part of a healing tradition that has been evolving over the past 5,000 years, which is based on the wisdom brought by ancient healers.
He does point out, however, that for Ayurveda to work, it is vital that people seek out the right physician to help them through the process of ayurvedic healing. The right physician will know exactly what to prescribe in terms of lifestyle modifications, dietary modifications, medicine and purifying treatments. The best kind of physician, he says, is one that is recommended by another member of your family or by a friend, as then their services are tried and tested, and the results can be proved.
There are around 600,000 practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine in India, but it can still be difficult to find one who practises pure Ayurvedic tradition but also combines this with an understanding of modern medicine. He also points out that the tradition of Ayurvedic medicine is often passed down through the family, so your physician may be a third of fourth generation of practitioners, with a lot of inherited wisdom.
