Great garden furniture can take the comfort and looks of your garden to the next level. Buying outdoor furniture is not very different from buying indoor furniture, but there are some additional considerations as well. Here are a few things to look for while choosing garden furniture:
What’s the weather like?
Is your weather hot and dry or humid? How often does it rain? As humidity rises in the summer, the wood absorbs moisture and expands again. This contraction and expansion can lead to chips or flaking of your wooden furniture. The wood should be termite-resistant, which is apt for outdoor furniture. Cast aluminium is durable, but if you live in an area that is windy, there’s a danger of it blowing over. Aluminium also absorbs heat, so top the chairs with some soft padding. Steel furniture is heavy and, in years, will need anti-rust treatment.
How much space do you have?
What shape do you have to work with? Is it long and narrow or broad and wide? Make sure to leave enough space around your furniture to be able to walk comfortably. If your furniture is too small, you won’t spend much time using it. If it’s too large, your garden space will feel compromised. If your space is limited, look for furniture that folds or is easily taken apart for compact storage.
Is it easy to care for?
You want a material that stands up to your weather conditions and looks good with minimal maintenance. You should be able to enjoy your space in the garden instead of having to spend hours looking after the furniture. Moisture can cause some metals to corrode. Aluminum, teak or resin don’t need too much care. Wrought iron can last for a really long time and can take heat and moisture. Plastic resin chairs or side tables look great with their vibrant colouring. Woven plastic rattan-style weave furniture looks like traditional rattan furniture but is much more durable and easy to look after. Consider a patio umbrella in your garden for shade if you get too much sun.
What’s your budget?
You get what you pay for. If your budget is limited, you could also gradually upgrade the furniture. If you use pillows and cushions, change them from time to time to give a fresher look. Do your research, and check consumer reports and reviews, before making a big purchase.
