How to Enjoy a Healthy and Safe Diwali Celebration

Diwali is always a very special day for millions of Indians, no matter whereabouts in the world they are living. The day sees the coming together of Indians into one single community, and the wellness and wellbeing that is generated by the power and emotion of such a festival cannot be underestimated.

People start planning their celebrations weeks in advance, but whilst you are waiting for the day to dawn, there are also some health and safety tips that you should take on board and make sure you incorporate in your preparations.

First of all, sweets are everywhere during Diwali and they are very hard to resist. Colourful sweets make up such an important part of the celebration, but you should always bear in mind that Indians are prone to diabetes and so you should always keep your intake of starch and sugar to an absolute minimum.

You should also try to stay away from sweets that have chemical preservatives added to them, as these preservatives can cause all kinds of damage to your body, including damaging your kidneys and liver and also causing cancer and asthma attacks.

In these days where there are increasing levels of noise and air pollution, it is also important to have a think about using firecrackers in a responsible way. The best thing to do is to buy as few firecrackers as possible, but if you are going to buy lots then try to find ones that are eco-friendly as these have an inbuilt mechanism that reduces the noise pollution that emits from them.

Firecrackers also carry a risk of burn injuries, and so you should take precautions when using them. Always wear slippers when you are dealing with any kind of explosive, and never try to tamper with a cracker after it has been lit. Stay at a safe distance even if the firecracker does not appear to be exploding – do not go back to it!
