Whether it is in your home or office, palm house plants add beauty and several health benefits. Aside from cleaning the air, palm plants can make more oxygen available in the room. Palms are slow-growing, particularly as potted plants. It may be years before your indoor palm attains any size. They are very tolerant of neglect, but they will grow wonderfully when given the proper care. Here are a few ways to care for your indoor palms:
Choose the right variety – Some palms prefer a location that receives bright light, but no direct sun. Others need full sunlight. Look for specific requirements for every species. Some of the varieties that you can choose from are Areca palm tree, Ponytail plant, Majesty palm tree, Fan palm, Cateracterum palm, Butterfly palm, Yucca palm and Sentry palm.
Give it light – Whether sun or shade-loving, don’t forget to turn your indoor palm a little from time to time so that each side receives equal light. This helps it to grow symmetrical and straight. Growing near a west or south-facing window. Most indoor palms prefer the shade, and will suffer if they get any direct sunlight.
Use the right soil – Use a porous soil mixture that is rich and well drained. Experts recommend using a loose, porous soil mix, such as a combo of peat moss, leaf mold, and shredded bark. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
Moist, not wet – Keep the soil moist at all times; not wet. Frequency of watering is also determined by the season, size of palm and pot, temperatures and the moisture content of the air. Be careful not to overwater. It is the number one killer of palm plants.
Use fertilisers once a while – Palms grow slowly so they don’t need much feeding. Even though a regular fertiliser will do, you also get palm fertiliser, which will benefit it.
Maintain them – You can keep palms sparkling clean by showering them in a sink or tub. When old leaves turn yellow, cut them from the trunk, don’t pull. You could prune off dead leaves to keep the plant tidy.
