Many ancient therapies used today include the concept of ‘centring’ yourself. To be centred implies balance, calmness and mindfulness of the present moment, and is usually achieved by a combination of contemplation and controlled breathing. Centring techniques are used in modern counselling and therapy sessions, many martial arts and meditative disciplines such as Yoga. Centring prayers or meditations also appear in some religions. It’s thought that some ancient structures, markings and labyrinths, such as Stonehenge, the famous Nazca lines in Peru, and the pre-Columbian Medicine Wheel in Wyoming were even designed as a centring aid for worshippers. Therapists say that when you feel centred, you don’t get knocked off balance by daily irritations, which you can deal with calmly while remaining true to yourself.
