Visitors bog in for fun festival
WINTON’S Angela Porter was the winner of the women’s bog-snorkelling event at the Julia Creek Dirt ‘n’ Dust Festival at the weekend.
She said she was delighted to cross the finish line.
“We mainly came here for the triathlon, but I thought I might as well try bog snorkelling while I’m here as well and have some fun,” she said.
“The bog trench is rank.
“It’s thick and dark and awful, I was happy to get to the end.”
Steve Bailey, from Cairns, won the men’s event.
Dirt ‘n’ Dust Festival committee president Stephen Malone said feedback from festival-goers suggested this year’s event was the best to date.
“The Julia Creek community takes great pride in welcoming the hordes of visitors to our little town each year and to hear people as far away as Sydney, Adelaide and Perth comment on how professionally run the weekend is really makes the months of planning and preparation worthwhile,” he said.
“We’ve worked closely with neighbouring towns to ensure visitors experience the very best outback hospitality during their trip and by all reports it will see many people return to the west for future holidays.”
The festival injects more than $1 million into the local economy.
