Be prepared

Family wellness comes from being happy as well as in good general health. In these difficult financial times, raising a young family can be stressful. Many people are struggling with a lack of job security or with the rising cost of living. Fortunately, there are many things that you can in order to make sure you are prepared for whatever is around the corner.

Writing a list is always a good starting point: note down every problem or worry that you have, and any difficulty that you feel might arise in the future. Include absolutely every eventuality that you can imagine, from plausible things, such as losing your job or having an unexpected car repair bill, to the sorts of things you might not expect, such as having your home unexpectedly flooded or dealing with a sudden health problem. It may seem morbid to write this sort of list, but you will actually find that writing things down takes a great deal of stress away from you: it’s better to have things down on paper than buzzing around in your head! Writing this sort of list can also help you to move on to the second stage, which is planning for how you would deal with some of the possibilities. This will give you a headstart on what to do, if you do ever find yourself in a similar situation. You can also prepare by having a box of items such as canned goods, torches, medicines and other emergency equipment.

In addition to preparing for future events, you can also lower your stress levels and boost your general wellbeing by planning ahead for your day-to-day life. Creating activities that are free and can be enjoyed as a family will strengthen your family wellness and also help you to economise. Your plans could include ideas for free activities such as a trip to the library or park; a walk in the countryside; a cookery lesson in the home; a storytelling session or a crafting session. All of these activities are free, fun and can be planned in advance.
