Milpitas track athletes advance to qualifier meet

The Santa Clara Valley Athletic League qualifier meet will be held today (May 16) at Santa Clara High School. Only the top 16 varsity marks in the El Camino and De Anza divisions move on to this meet. The top six finishers will then advance to the Central Coast Section Trials at San Jose City College the following Saturday, May 23. Results below are from the league finals held May 6 and 8 at Gunn and Milpitas.

 

Frosh/soph boys

 

 

  • 400 meter relay (Devin Crummie, Dion Leonard, Amir Davis, Spencer Won), league champion at 46.20 seconds.

 

  • Devin Crummie: League champion in both 65-meter hurdles (9.34 seconds) and 300 hurdles (42.37 seconds). New school record holder in the 65 hurdles.

 

  • Andy Buchanan ran the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:42.31, making him the fourth fastest freshman in the SCVAL.

 

  • Phillip Bui took sixth place in the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 5 inches.

 

 

Junior varsity girls

 

  • 400-meter relay (Alyson Shipp , Cara Nguyen, Maria Tayaba, Cindy Duong) took second place with a time of 52.43, making them All-League.

 

  • Maria Tayaba ran the 100 meters at 13.30 taking first place, making her league champion.

 

  • Cindy Duong ran the 300 hurdles at 48.66 taking first place, making her league champion.

 

  • 1,600-meter relay (Cindy Duong, Ashley Nguyen, Ailynne Rodriguez, Kaitlin Bezema) ran a time of 4:30.16 taking third, making them All-League.

 

  • Rhoda Musika, All-League, shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 11 inches, taking third place. League champion in the discus with a throw of 80 feet, 10 inches.

 

  • Grace Shau took second in the discus making her All-League with a throw of 78 feet, 8 inches.

 

 

Varsity boys

 

  • Michael Chen, All League, in both the 110 hurdles (third place) with a time of 15.73 and the 300 hurdles (second place) with a time of 39.71. He qualified for both events to the SCVAL Qualifier meet.

 

  • Zach Barnes qualified for the SCVAL meet in the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.76.

 

  • Sean Barnes qualified for the SCVAL meet for all of his individual events: 100 meters (11.53), 200 meters (23.22) and the discus (106 feet).

 

  • Elton Zhou qualified for the SCVAL meet in the triple jump with a jump of 37 feet, 6.25 inches.

 

  • Jason Scrempos qualified for the SCVAL meet for the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 7.5 inches. He also took third place, making him All-League.

Varsity girls

 

  • Carla Espinoza ran the race of her life in the 1,600 meters, 5:43.17, beating her previous personal record by 9 seconds, making her an alternate for the SCVAL meet.

 

  • Megan O’Brien qualified for the SCVAL meet in both the 100 hurdles (17.86 seconds) and 300 hurdles (51.19 seconds).
  • Shannon Kee qualified for the SCVAL meet in the high jump with a clearance of 4 feet, 6 inches.

 

  • Mabel Len qualified for the SCVAL meet for both the discus (92 feet, 10 inches) and shot put (30 feet, 4 inches).

 

  • Laiseni Matale qualified for the SCVAL meet for both the discus (84 feet, 10 inches) and shot put (30 feet, 3 inches).

 

  • Brianna Gay qualified for the SCVAL meet for the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 11 inches.

 

  • Audrey Tran qualified for the SCVAL meet for both the long jump (15 feet, 6.25 inches) and triple jump (33 feet, 9 inches). She also took first at league finals in the triple jump, making her league champion.
