Will Garber is Modesto’s newest PBA champion after winning the regional title at the Vanessa Brown Homes West Open at Yosemite Lanes.
Garber barely made the cut, qualifying 14th out of 16 from Saturday’s action. He was joined by Jim Gordin (12th) and Myles Duty (14th) for Sunday’s match-play finals.
After three rounds of match-play elimination, Garber led with a 7-2 record. In the final, he beat Dublin’s Gregory Thompson 278-255 to earn the title and $2,000. Gregory won $1,200, and Duty and Gordin each won $500.
Jim Cole, Michael Haro and Dalton Durossette came out champions in the pro-am event. Cole won the senior pro-am with a 1,799 total, taking home $250 ahead of Jim Cronkite (1,769, $150). Haro (1,836, $350) won the adult event ahead of Virginia Higle (1,792, $235). Durossette (1,703) earned a $100 scholarship in the Youth Division, beating out Peter Kennedy (1,680, $50).
A 300 for his 13th – Local youth bowler Roman Heath received an early bowling birthday present this year. The day before his 13th, he was set to bowl in the Nor-Cal Junior Championships at Cloverleaf Bowl in Fremont.
Bowling in the doubles event, he posted his first perfect game, with his 300 leading to a personal-record 759 series. Heath, who has been bowling for five years, uses a two-handed delivery much like pro Jason Belmonte. Heath and his partner, Sara Nassberg, won the scratch doubles event.
Yosemite Ladies Tournament – The team of Sylvia Williams, Irene Payne and Pam Lecher won the Yosemite Ladies Luncheon Tournament with a 2,250 team total. Debbie Couch, Cindy James and Tina Munson (2,217) were second, and Beth Sims, Ann Zuidema and April Doran (2,160) third.
McHenry Keglers – Dianna and Larry Doss teamed with Chris Dickinson to win the McHenry Keglers Tournament with a 2,476 total. Earl Purcell, Bud Thompson and Greg Fusi (2,468) were second and Ann Zuidema, Kelly Napuunoa and Eric Benz third at 2,416.
Senior No-Tap – Friday afternoon brings the Senior Fun Day No-Tap Tournament at McHenry. Potluck at noon, check-in at 12:30 p.m. and bowling against colored pins at 1 p.m. … Sunday, the May Scratch 6-Gamer runs at Yosemite starting at noon with check-in at 11 a.m. The tournament will be rolling on the USBC National Team Event oil pattern. Entry fee is $60.
Peach Classic – The 65th annual Peach Classic Tournament at McHenry kicks off its 11-weekend run Saturday with squads at noon, 2:30 p.m. and 5. Special squads also are set up for Memorial Day at the same times. Walk-ins are welcome up to 15 minutes before each squad. The Peach is a singles handicap tournament and guarantees $2,000 for first place. There is a main prize list plus a high game (men and women), scratch series (men and women), 10-game and bonus-day prize lists. Bonus days pay an extra $100 to the high score for the day and $50 to second-highest. Entry fee is $60 per person and includes all prize lists. An estimated prize fund of $30,000 is expected.
