Planning a bachelor party? Don’t rule out Thailand, State Dept. says

The State Department has a lot on its plate — including offering advice Thursday to Americans planning bachelor parties in Thailand in the wake of a military coup.

State Department spokesman Jennifer Psaki offered a cautiously encouraging response when asked if travelers should go through with honeymoons or bachelor parties in the usually festive country whose capital, Bangkok, was the setting for “The Hangover Part II.”

Psaki said the department is not advising Americans to leave Thailand.

“I would advise any bachelor or bachelorette to consult our website, depending on the timing of their weekend plans – or week plans, whatever they may be,” she added.

For now, the website merely urges Americans to avoid protests, most of which have occurred near government facilities in Bangkok.

“U.S. citizens are cautioned that even demonstrations that are meant to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence,” the site says.
