As the 2015 election continues to gather steam, the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center (WARDC), on Thursday, called on various political parties in the country to adopt voluntary party quotas to ensure that more women emerge as political candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
The Executive Director of WARDC, Dr Abiola Afolabi, said this in Calabar at a two-day capacity building workshop on gender equity and affirmative action on increasing women representation in governance.
According to her, “elections are fast approaching and many women may want to contest as candidates of political parties but the psyche of people within a political party will not allow women to get to a desired level and what we are asking is that political parties come up with a voluntary party quota to allow more women emerge as political candidates.”
