Today was movement day in the Michigan recruiting world as football and basketball featured a number of players connecting with U-M coaches.
June 15 is the first day U-M basketball traditionally offers sophomores and they were released in a big afternoon burst.
Findlay (Nev.) Prep point guard Derryck Thornton Jr., the nation’s No. 20 overall player by Rivals, told the Free Press that he received an offer. Columbus (Ohio) Northland small forward Seth Towns tweeted about his and multiple reports from GoBlueWolverine.com and UMHoops.com indicated that Gill St. Bernard’s (N.J) shooting guard Tyus Battle (Rivals’ No. 11 player), Detroit U-D Jesuit point guard Cassius Winston (No. 30) and Medina (Ohio) power forward Jon Teske also received U-M offers.
Though the scholarship numbers are uncertain for that 2016 class, currently only four spots project open right now, so those offered may be competing for limited spots.
Some of that may depend on the 2015 class, where U-M currently does not have a commitment but was pursuing guards.
In football, the start of Michigan’s high school camp, which runs through Thursday, was a chance to get the elite talent on campus.
The Wolverines hosted two of the nation’s best quarterbacks in the 2016 class as both California residents tweeted about their arrival.
Earlier this week Malik Henry, the No. 1 dual-threat QB in 247Sports.com’s rankings, came to the state to attend the Sound Mind, Sound Body camp in Harper Woods.
That led him to East Lansing on Saturday, where he tweeted a photo of himself in an MSU jersey. Then the Westlake (Calif.) Village QB was on to Ann Arbor Sunday where he tweeted a number of photos, one by the Crisler Center waterfall and one inside Michigan Stadium.
Rivals.com reported he plans to visit Ohio State (June 19) and Notre Dame (June 20).
He was joined by K.J. Costello, 247’s No. 5 pro-style QB from Rancho Santa Margarita Catholic, who tweeted “Michigan is unreal… The weather feels like Cali” and also a photo in the stadium.
While those are long-term prospects for 2016, Michigan officially said goodbye to a former commitment, 2015 Cleveland cornerback Shaun Crawford, who announced he was committing to Notre Dame. He de-committed from Michigan on May 24.
