Being Frank: Lampard delivers rallying call to England team-mates

The Three Lions were left crushed in the wake of Saturday’s opening 2-1 defeat to Italy in Group D.

Another loss to Uruguay in São Paulo tomorrow will leave England’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages in tatters.

“We are under no illusions what the next game is about”
Frank Lampard

But it has emerged that Lampard gave a rallying speech to the squad along with captain Steven Gerrard when Hodgson’s men returned from Manaus.

Lampard is desperate not to go home after the group stage in what is his last crack at World Cup glory.

The former Chelsea midfielder said: “We had to put the game to bed.

“There were a lot of good reports (from the Italy defeat) and rightly so, but I don’t want to part of a team which had great potential and played a good performance but then we all go home.

“Nobody wants to do that.

“We are under no illusions what the next game is about. It was very important me and Steven said the same because we’ve been there and gone home earlier than what we wanted to before.

“We wanted to really take stock now and realise there’s a Cup Final coming up and we had four or five days to really get ready for it.

“It didn’t need that much to be said. The young lads are good, the staff are all good and we’re all very aware of what the situation is.”
