Diversity On Your CV Could Guarantee Security

There was a time when it was normal for a person to work for one company, in one line of work for their whole lives. My father has worked for the same company for around thirty years and though he’s had a fairly wide variety of jobs in that time, he’s always been employed by the same people. Needless to say, that time’s gone. Most of us will have had several jobs in several different fields, it’s become necessary to diversify. A variety of skills and abilities is now what employers look for, they want people who can adapt to every situation and who have been thrown in at the deep end a few times before.

Everyone changing jobs so often has both advantages and disadvantages. People generally get a better idea of what they want to do in life simply by trying several things and it’s now far less likely for someone to stay in a job they hate when they know there are things out there they love. On the other hand, employers have become much more lax in benefits for employees and no longer guarantee the perks they once did to ensure people stayed to work for them. They’re used to a lot of new personal and as such they don’t feel the need to provide for the old ones as much.

In terms of getting a new job you’re going to want to diversify. You’ll want more than one career path on your CV, more than just bar work or working in a shop. The wider the variety of things you’ve shown you can do, the more likely you are to be useful to an employer as you’ll have already shown your capacity for adaptation.
With the recession there are statistically less jobs currently than there have been in the past. To get that diversity of previous employment on your CV you’re going to have to work a little harder and be crafty. Did you know that tens of thousands of new employees are hired every year over the Christmas period. These are just temporary staff but securing a job like this will look great on your CV and let you broaden your perspective horizons in the process!
