Why Have You Never Seen An Obese Caveman?

It’s no secret that you live in a world where it’s hard to lose weight. Refined carbs, such as bread, rice and pasta, are relatively new creations which are detrimental to your weight loss efforts, if not your wellness, so should you be going back to a simpler time? Though the wellbeing of cavemen was threatened by other things that aren’t a problem for us today, perhaps they got it right when it comes to eating healthily.

 

Eating like your ancestors isn’t a random or unthinkable task, but rather is a commonly accepted way of healthy eating known as the Paleolithic diet, or Paleo for short. Think about what a caveman might eat when he is running around and catching dinosaurs to keep as pets (I’ll admit my historical knowledge in this area is largely based on old episodes of The Flintstones) and the Paleo diet is essentially that. This means opting for nuts, berries, fruit, vegetables, fish and, of course, meat.

 

When you think about it, it makes sense for your wellness. You’re eating nature’s food and nothing else added, processed or refined. Why would you want to tamper with Mother Nature’s handiwork by adding refined carbohydrates to the formula? It has been proven time and time again that when you have a lot of carbohydrates in your diet, not only are you at risk of weight gain and obesity, but there are also consequences to your wellness such as high cholesterol and sugar levels, diabetes, and heart disease, which is something that your prehistoric ancestors never had to worry about.

 

Put it into perspective. Relative to the amount of time mankind has been walking the earth (or at least dragging his knuckles across it); refined carbohydrates have not been around for that long. The fact that people eat more and more carbohydrates now only dates back as far as the introduction of agriculture, and the high volume of refined carbs has only really become so prevalent in the Western world’s diet in the last 100 years or so. Seeing as this highly correlates with the list of modern diseases already mentioned, and others, surely it would be wise to get back to your roots and try eating like your ancestors did.
