Yoga actually originated in ancient India as a form of workout to fight diseases, stay fit and also to boost the body’s immune system. Yoga asanas were performed to follow a physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Many Hindu monks including Swami Vivekananda brought yoga to western countries, and it has been popular there ever since.
According to a number of studies and surveys, yoga is a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma and heart patients. It has also been shown to be effective in providing relief for various mental and skeletal health problems.
Apart from curing diseases and protecting the body from health issues, you can also practice yoga to lose weight. Many weight-loss diet plans are not effective when you try to keep weight off in the long-term. Once you leave the diet, you again start putting on weight. However, if you practice yoga regularly, you can lose weight and stay in great shape.
There are a number of positions which are very beneficial to weight loss. These include the bow pose, which involves lying on your stomach and reaching back with both hands to hold your feet. Hold this position for a few seconds at a time, and then release. This exercise works on the thighs, abdomen, chest and hips. If you breathe in and out deeply to relax your mind at the same time it can also relieve stress.
