Personal Growth: Why Is It So Important?

Many people see personal growth in different ways, from being happy to seeing yourself as successful. There are countless books on the subject, all offering you a chance to experience a feeling of wellbeing and fulfilment. It’s easy to pass this subject off as an optional extra, but many people miss out on the opportunity to develop themselves which can often lead to a greater feeling of wellbeing. Self development is arguably one of the most important tasks you can engage in, as it involves so much of your life – from work and social, to how you feel emotionally about things.

The first step is to assess yourself as you are right now. You can do this by setting aside some time where you will be on your own, taking a pen and paper, and considering questions such as what kind of person you want to be, your goals and where you want to be in ten or twenty years time. If you find it difficult to do this, try to imagine how a friend or family member might answer. By answering these questions, you can start to build a portrait of the sort of person you want to be, which will help you navigate a clearer path of how to become that person. Are you struggling to achieve the goals you had set aside for yourself ten years ago? Perhaps you need to devote more time to developing that area of your life. Do you think that there are areas of your personality that you want to improve? Maybe you need to set aside more time to develop yourself emotionally.

Going forward, you need to take the information you’ve gathered and set out the first steps towards achieving them. Begin by making meaningful changes, enlisting family and friends to help you and report on your progress, so that you stay on track. These changes are for your long term development and wellbeing, so if you find yourself thrown off track by events in your life, bear this in mind – these plans can be put on hold and returned to. Personal growth is vital for a happy and fulfilled life so if you’ve never considered it before, you may find it beneficial.
