Dealing with Your First Argument

When a relationship is in its early weeks and months, it’s easy to believe that everything is perfect. You can’t imagine your partner ever doing anything to upset you because they are so wonderful! But then the day comes when you have your first argument. Cross words are exchanged and you can’t believe that the relationship you thought was so precious is at risk.

But don’t worry; having an argument isn’t a sign that your relationship is over, in fact quite the opposite. Having an argument shows that you’ve reached a stage where you can disagree with one another. It shows that your relationship is progressing into something more serious and if you can manage your differences effectively, it signals that this relationship could become something permanent.

The important thing is to look at the cause of the argument. Was it over something petty such as your partner forgetting to buy milk or was it more serious – such as flirting with your best friend? If you can distinguish between the two, you’ll be able to decide if it’s something you can forgive and move on from.

How you deal with your first argument is a good grounding for the rest of your relationship. In other words, start as you mean to go on. If you can resolve an argument quickly, put it in the past and move on, it suggests that you will be happy together in the future. But if you fight for hours and spend the evening crying or wondering where your partner has stormed off to, it might signal that the relationship isn’t the right one for you.
