With your upcoming nuptials, you should be right on schedule with your pre-wedding Beauty regime. But, aren’t the rains causing havoc in your routine? “The monsoons can make your skin misbehave; otherwise normal skin can break out, experience shine-attacks or cause patchy dryness overnight,” Madhavi Irani, chief officer – content at Nykaa elaborates, “The problem is that during the rains, there’s a deluge of airborne and waterborne microbes. Getting caught in showers can also cause skin infections, open pores, splotchy patches, redness, and itching. The funny thing is the wetter it is outside, the more parched your skin (and hair) gets. The excessive humidity in the air can cause your hair to take on a life of its own! Parched hair absorbs moisture from the air, making it impossible to style. Additionally, you are more prone to dandruff attacks, fungal scalp infections, split ends and even lice!” With so many problems, what can you do to ensure your homemade beauty tips regime stays on track? Fear not. We have your back.
Save your skin
The skin is the biggest organ of our body, and the most exposed to external factors like pollution, weather, etc. It needs a lot of TLC, especially during the monsoons, to ensure that it remains clean and blemish-free. “Using a non-drying, tea tree-infused antibacterial face wash and alcohol-free toner is a good place to start,” Irani tells, “This will prevent skin infections and eruptions. Ingredients like witch hazel, lavender, and chamomile in toners help reduce redness, itching and minimize pores. It’s also important to use a light moisturizer to protect the lipid barrier of the skin to prevent rebound oiliness. Use a water-based moisturizer that doesn’t clog pores and end your daily routine with a mattifying sunscreen.”
Monsoon skin regime
“A good CTM with gentle, effective products is essential, besides a once-a-week charcoal mask regime to thoroughly detoxify pores,” Irani informs. CTM, for the uninitiated, stands for cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Use a mild face wash to clean your skin. If you have dry skin, you can make a scrub from crushed almonds and honey and apply all over your face. Keep it for five to seven minutes before you wash it off. For oily skin, don’t over-cleanse in order to reduce oiliness. Use a ripe papaya mash or pure oatmeal scrub as a cleanser and exfoliator. Cleanse thrice a day if possible.
Post cleansing, you need to tone your skin every time. It helps restore your skin’s pH balance and prevents breakout and infections. Use an anti-bacterial toner every night after you cleanse your skin. You can also make your own toner. Take five drops of chamomile oil and add to one teaspoon of milk and apply this if you have dry skin. If you have oily skin, then add five drops of lavender oil instead. Monsoons tend to make dry skin more dehydrated, and oily skin can get over-moisturized. Once you cleanse and tone, use a gentle moisturizer to properly hydrate your skin. If you have oily skin, use a water-based moisturizer, and dry skin can have lotion-based.
