We all have those days when we’re grumpy, fed-up and don’t feel like talking to anyone. But snapping at your boss or upsetting a co-worker is never a good idea, no matter how bad tempered you’re feeling.
So, when you’re in a cranky mood, what can you do to stop your feelings showing? Well, naturally, how you deal with things will depend on the nature of your job and how much control you have over your work environment but here are some tips to get you started:
Find a quiet space
When you’re already in a bad mood, having to put up with your colleagues’ chatter can test your patience. So, if it’s possible, try moving away to a quiet space for a while. Perhaps tell your colleagues that you need to work on a particular project in silence and so will be in a different room.
Take a break
If you feel your blood pressure rising and know you’re about to snap at someone, take a 10-minute break. Simply walking away or making a cup of tea can give you a little breathing space and time to collect your thoughts.
Pop in your earphones
If you don’t want to talk to anyone, pop in your ear phones and listen to some music for a while. Not only will this give you space alone with your thoughts, but music also has a great power to transform a bad mood.
Be open
Depending on the relationship you have with your co-workers, your best option might be to be upfront and let them know you’re in a bad mood. This way they’ll know not to bother you and won’t take it personally if you’re not your usual cheerful self.
