Painful Walking? Five Causes of Chronic Foot Pain

Many people spend their days counting down the minutes until they can get home and get off of their aching feet. Chronic foot pain is a big problem that causes those who suffer from it no end of trouble. Fortunately, while there are many things that cause chronic foot pain, there are often ways to recover.

Bad Shoes

This is one of the most common sources of chronic foot pain, and it is also one of the easiest problems to resolve. Metatarsalgia, which simply describes pain and inflammation of your foot, is often caused by shoes that don’t fit properly. High heels are often the culprits in causing chronic foot pain and switching to flat-heeled shoes could solve your problem quickly. However, other types of shoes can be a problem as well, especially any which shift too much of your weight to the front of your feet when you walk. If you have difficulty finding shoes that fit well, it is a good idea to visit a shoe store with attendants on hand to measure your feet and recommend shoes based on your needs.

Heel Spurs

People can develop growths, known as heel spurs, on their heels simply by having bad posture or an odd way of walking. If you have high arches or flat feet, you are more likely to develop a heel spur. Often, resting the foot and using over-the-counter pain medications is enough. If not, be sure to visit your podiatrist for more thorough treatment.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis occurs when the band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes becomes inflamed or irritated. If you have this condition, you can expect to feel mostly heel pain when you first get out of bed each morning. Over-the-counter pain relievers and shoes with a comfort sole and good arch support should take care of the problem.

Fractured Foot Bones

You can sometimes fracture a foot bone through something as simple as exercising too hard or kicking something when you walk around in the dark in the middle of the night. Callie Bradden, a foot surgeon in Westland, MI, says that while it is possible to fracture any of your foot bones, heel fractures are the most common and if you suspect a fracture, it is likely of the heel. It is essential to visit your podiatrist if you think you may have fractured your foot. While splinting and casting may take care of your problem, it is sometimes necessary to have surgery to repair the fracture.

Ingrown Toenails

When your toenail is allowed to grow deep into your skin, it can cause infection and constant irritation. Clean your toenails regularly and keep them trimmed short to avoid this problem. Treat yourself to a pedicure, and be sure to see a podiatrist if the problem persists.

Don’t let chronic foot pain take the joy out of your life. Make the changes necessary to end this problem, and see a qualified podiatrist if you believe you may have a problem with your feet that requires medical attention. Get well, and get busy enjoying your life again.
