Bowling Green DAR hears Clarence Cannon presentation

 

The Bowling Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at the Methodist Church on Thursday, March 27. Regent Jane Quade called the meeting to order at 2 p.m.

 

Joyce Edwards led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Charlene McCune led the group in singing the Star Spangled Anthem accompanied by Marlene Kut on the piano. Patty Tophinke led the group in reciting the Preamble to the Constitution. Diane Fuerst led the group in reciting the American’s Creed while Marjorie Jamieson led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the State of Missouri. Georgia Gamm led the recitation of the Daughter’s Pledge.

 

Chaplain Elaine Niemeyer gave a devotional from the book “God’s Little Devotional Book” about baseball great Jackie Robinson. She also read Joshua 1:9. Pam Williams read the President General’s Message. Diane Fuerst read the minutes from the February meeting.

 

The Treasurer’s Report for January was given by Charlene McCune.

 

Marlene Kut gave the National Defense Report on Corruption which involved the United States military based in Afghanistan. Pam Williams gave the revitalization report which reflected a membership of forty-five, seven supplementals recently sent in, and five new supplementals presented to her at today’s meeting. It takes approximately one year for supplementals to be approved. The Nominating Committee will present their selection of slate of potential officers for the upcoming two years at the April meeting. Marilyn Johnson, Regent of the Pike County Chapter, Louisiana, will install the new officers in May.

 

Christy Wendel gave a report on conservation issues involved what type of animal from the Missouri Conservationist magazine. Also she announced the sighting of approximately 40 eagles at the dam in Clarkesville recently.

Veterans Project Patriot: DAR Project Patriot which supports America’s service personnel in current conflicts abroad.

 

Regent Quade announced five members would be attending the State Conference on May 3 through 5. They are: Jane Quade, Lori Coates, Christy Wendel, Elaine Niemeyer, and Diane Fuerst. If you would like to go please contact Jane Quade as soon as possible.

 

New Business:

The 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemorative Event was announced by Regent Quade. This was in the March newsletter each chapter can elect to participate. The event will be discussed at next month’s meeting.

 

Recognition was given to Deborah Ingram for being a member of the DAR since 1989. A certificate was made and will be given to her. Beulah Woods also was noted for her ten year membership of the Dar since February 2004.

 

Pam Williams reported her sewing group has made 150 pairs of socks for veterans. The Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW is filling them with goodies. Pam will check on this as a possible project for the DAR to be involved.

 

Member Dodie Harness is now 106 years of age and is in a local nursing home.

 

The March program was given by Steve Lilley on Clarence Cannon who was a Representative to the House of Representatives for forty-one years with an impressive knowledge of politics.

 

Clarence Cannon was raised in the Elsberry. He was noted for giving children a silver dollar on the street when he was in town.

 

He was a man of small stature and played football at LaGrange College. He did not drink any form of alcohol. In 1911, he became a clerk for Champ Clark. In 1918, he became the Parliamentarian for the House of Representatives and virtually wrote the current procedures for parliamentary meeting conduct. He was the world’s leading authority on Parliamentarian Procedures.

 

Mr. Cannon was the Appropriations Committee Chairman for many years and wouldn’t give approved for projects unless you could prove the value of the project to him.

 

He tried to join the military several times but as fate decreed it was not to be.

 

He died in 1964 and is buried at the Elsberry Cemetery. Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson, presidents of the United States, attended his funeral. One of his two daughters still is living.

The next meeting is Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Hostesses for the meeting will be Diane Fuerst, Joyce Lewis, and Jane Quade.

 

Being no further business the meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
