Clarence Town shopping precinct most at risk of flooding: study

Dungog Council is doing its bit to reduce the flood risk around Clarence Town.

A flood risk management plan and study has been completed for the town and Williams River flood plain.

It assessed two separate impacts of flooding to Clarence Town from the Williams River and nearby Town Creek.

Council’s Manager of Environmental Services Paul Minett says the plan, due to be adopted by Councillors tonight, recommends a range of mitigation works.

“Well the study itself highlighted that the main areas of concern in Clarence Town are around the commercial centre which is the shops in Clarence Town,” he said.

“So the plan that’s been devised concentrates on that area.

“It includes drainage works and some road re-profiling just to mitigate the impacts.”

Council’s Manager of Environmental Services Paul Minett says the drainage and road works should go some way to protecting the shopping precinct.

He says it has been a complex task assessing the flood risks.

“There are two separate of impacts of flooding to Clarence Town, one is from the Williams River and one is from the local catchment which is a creek running through Clarence Town which is called Town Creek.

“So we’ve had to model the impacts of those separately and then combine them to determine the exact flooding impacts.”
