Disc golf course was ready for tournament

After September’s flood, there was some question about whether or not the 12th annual High Plains Challenge disc golf tournament could be held at Riverside Park this year.

But Fort Morgan city staff and a local club worked to make it playable again, and did a good job of getting it ready, said John Bird, organizer of the event.

From the shape it was in after the flood to its current condition was an amazing accomplishment, he said.

More than 160 players registered for the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Bird said, which was a few more than last year. Players came from 10 different states and all over Colorado.

It featured some of the top players, including Joe Rovere of Lafayette and Peter Shrive of Laramie, Wyo., who has won 11 international championships.

This year, the players started on tee times, which came up every 10 minutes, Bird said.

Bird said he is trying to get the people from Morgan County to get more involved with disc golf, since they have access to one of the top-rated courses in the state.

They can develop good skills on the Fort Morgan course, he noted.
