Making A New Colleague Feel Welcome

Making A New Colleague Feel Welcome

We all know how daunting it is to start a new job. When someone new joins your workplace, it’s important to make them feel welcome. Not only will they perform better at work if they settle in quickly, but helping a new colleague will boost morale and strengthen relationships within existing teams too. Here are five ways to make a new co-worker feel welcome:

Give them a tour

Make sure your new workmate gets a tour of the building as soon as possible on their first day. Your boss might not have time to show them around so why not offer to give them a tour? It’s a great opportunity to build a friendship with your new colleague.

Create a welcome pack

Staff handbooks, contact lists, a seating plan showing who sits where; there are lots of little things you can pull together to help make life easier for a new co-worker.

Invite them for coffee

It can be hard to get to know someone when you are busy with day-to-day tasks at work. Invite your new colleague for a coffee or for lunch and enjoy a little time away from the office while you get to know them better.

Unwritten rules

Avoid gossip but do let your new workmate in on the things that their boss or HR manager might have neglected to say. Perhaps there is an unwritten rule that no-one leaves the office early except on a Friday, or maybe the boss has a favourite car-parking space that no-one else should use.

Keep checking in

It can take several weeks to settle into life at a new workplace so catch up with your new colleague regularly to see if they need help or advice.
