UNCW’s new basketball coach to make base pay of $300K

The University of North Carolina Wilmington released the contract Tuesday morning for the new men’s basketball coach.

Louisville Associate Head Basketball Coach Kevin Keatts agreed to a coaching deal with UNCW last week, making him the 10th men’s basketball coach in UNCW history.

According to the contract, Keatts signed a five year deal with a base salary of $300,000.

Additional bonuses and performance incentives include:

• $10,000 for APR annual score over 960

• $25,000 for each NCAA post-season tournament game played

• $25,000 for regular season conference championship

• $25,000 for a CAA Tournament championship

• $25,000 for a top 100 rating percentage index, RPI refers to NCAA RPI on selection Sunday

Furthermore, the contract states Keatts will receive 20% of UNCW Men’s Basketball Season Ticket holder sales revenue in excess of $185,000.

According to the contract, Keatts will get 24 vacation days and the university will provide a courtesy vehicle and cell phone for the coach to use.

While the previous coach received compensation for a TV/radio show, it appears Keatts will not get any special bonus for those duties, according to the contract.

The process to officially sign Keatts on as head coach required several signatures; Kevin Keatts, university officials, and the Board of Trustees. Once all required personnel signed the document, the contract becomes official and a public record. View the contract here: http://bit.ly/1knN13F

All required signatures were gathered Monday and the contract was “fully executed,” according to UNCW spokesperson Joe Browning. However, despite repeated requests, the newly approved contract and public record, was not released until Tuesday morning.

It was revealed last week that UNCW is on the hook for nearly a million dollars to pay out the remainder of the contract of former coach Buzz Peterson, who was fired at the end of the Seahawks season earlier this month.

Peterson will receive payments totaling $965,529.67 over the next couple years, in accordance with his contract. The former coach was the highest paid employee on the UNCW campus.

A press conference announcing Keatts’ official hiring is scheduled for April 1 inside Trask Coliseum at 3 p.m. The public is invited to meet Keatts and his family. Keatts’ earned $280,000 for his role as Associate Head Coach at the University of Louisville.

The UNCW athletic department ended the last fiscal year with a $400,000 deficit.
