Chanute girls 1st, boys 3rd at Fredonia track meet
Every member of the Chanute track and field team either met or exceeded first-year head coach Rick Rutter’s expectations at the Comets’ appearance at the Fredonia relays on Friday. That was the conclusion reached by Rutter after the Chanute girls team won the event by more than 50 points and the boys squad finished in third.
The Comet girls notched 123.33 points at the event, putting them 53.5 points ahead of second-place Independence. This dominating performance was boosted by first place finishes in the discus and shot put by senior Sierra Masoner. Kyndal Frederick won the meet’s 400 meter event, and also placed highly in the 100m and 200m sprint events. Plus, the meet saw first place performances by a 4×800 relay team (consisting of Shelby Stair, Jena Petterson, Talia Ramsey, and Madison Dispensa) and high-jumping sophomore Madi Rollins. Senior Haley Taylor finished in second place in all of the throwing events at this meet; javelin, discus and shot put. Hurdler Regan Aylward and the school’s 4×400 relay (Shelby Stair, Kelsey Perez, Madi Rollins, and Rena Stair) also earned second place finishes.
The boys team racked up 58 points, while the tournament winners Girard had 88.75 and second place Caney finished with 88.25. The Comet boys benefitted from a big first place finish in the 100m dash by junior Ethin Van Anne, an event that he hasn’t competed in for a few years. He asked to be included it in this meet because Rutter figured he was a quick enough starter to do well at sprint events. This prediction turned out to be entirely correct, as Van Anne had a faster time in this event than any Chanute sprinter has achieved in over five years.
The Comets also saw a first place finish by the boys 4×100 relay, consisting of Van Anne, Caleb Dietsch, Britt Lee and Derek Sharp. Chandler Summers garnered a second place finish in the 400m dash, despite dealing with a nagging injury that kept him out of other events. Van Anne finished in second in the long jump, while Derek Sharp earned second place in the triple jump.
The Chanute track and field athletes will next travel to Girard on Friday, for a big meet that will feature 20 4A and 5A schools from around the area. Here are the results from the Chanute athletes that placed at this meet:
