EUGENE, Ore. – Navy men’s track and field sophomore Jay Stell (Carlsbad, N.M.) finished third overall in javelin at the NCAA Championship Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Stell is the fourth Navy men’s track and field student-athlete to garner All-America status in the javelin.
“It was such a relief throwing as far as I did on my first throw,” Stell said. “All the work that I put in and to finish third was a great accomplishment overall and I cannot wait to improve on my mark next year.”
Stell began the second heat with a throw of 71.30m, which placed him third overall amongst the 24 competitors. He threw a mark of 67.95m for his second throw and fouled his third throw to wrap up his three throws in the second heat. Stell’s mark of 71.30m placed him third overall to qualify in the final heat of the NCAA Championship.
Stell’s mark of 71.30m withstood the rest of the competitors and placed him third overall at the NCAA Championship to earn First Team All-America laurels. His throw of 71.30m was .05m off of his personal-best 71.35m that he set at the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries two weeks ago.
Stell joins former Midshipmen Stan Duplaga (1993), Robert Patton (1945) and Fred Bakutis (1935) as All-American in the javelin.
