Community Action For Diabetics
As with all chronic health conditions, prevention is better than cure in the case of those at risk of diabetes. A pilot community scheme focusing on pre-diabetic adults in Hartlepool could provide a way to change the fate of diabetics all over the country. Escape Diabetes Act Now (EDAN) is a charity dedicated to giving diabetics control over their own condition, and improving their wellbeing within a community setting. They are now working with Hartlepool Borough Council and in partnership with local GP surgeries to offer a range of practical support to those judged to be at diabetes risk, providing them with exercise sessions and nutritional guidance.
The pilot scheme will run for one year and concentrates on three groups of patients, each composed of twelve participants. The groups meet twice a week for a period of 24 weeks, and pay a small contribution of £2.10 per week for membership of the group. The people targeted for the scheme were those showing one or more risk factors in their medical records. For diabetes, this includes family history, obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Participants were invited to the scheme by their GP surgery directly, in order to ensure that those most in need received priority.
The scheme is due to develop into a larger exercise programme after the completion of its first 12-week phase. At this point, the groups will join together and be directed to a range of physical activities going on in their local community. The scheme mirrors a similar trial taking place in Middlesborough, and both show success in their early stages. It is to be hoped that the decision to trial these schemes represents a move towards community health organization, and the free provision of exercise and wellness support, especially for those of a lower income bracket.
