How to get rid of dry and chapped lips this winter
Even after applying over-the-counter lip products, do you think they are not doing a good enough job? Sadly, it’s not just your lip balm or gloss’ fault. Like your skin and hair, your lips too need special attention, during the winter season. The skin on your lips is much thinner than the skin on the other parts of the body, making it easier to crack and chap. The dry skin then prevents your lip products from getting deeper. Here are some natural cures, that you can whip up in your kitchen, to say hello to soft lips!
Milk cream
While the high fat content in cream helps moisturise your lips, the other nutrients in it can help you lighten dark lips. Rub some fresh milk cream on your lips and massage for a few minutes. After about 10 to 15 minutes, wash with warm water. Do this twice daily to help your lips stay pink and soft.
Honey
This natural moisturiser also has soothing and antibacterial properties that further help get rid of dry and chapped lips. Every night before going to bed, apply some raw organic honey on your chapped lips and leave overnight. In the morning, wash away with warm water.
Aloe vera
The anti-bacterial properties in aloe vera help soothe dry and chapped skin thereby removing the dead layer of skin cells. Extract some gel out of a freshly cut aloe vera leaf and apply directly onto your lips. Do this several times a day for better results.
Ghee or butter
Ghee and butter, both contain essential fatty acids that help condition and nourish dry and chapped skin. Massage a few drops of ghee into your lips and leave for about 15 to 20 minutes. Wash with warm water. Alternatively, you can also leave overnight. Do this daily for soft, kissable lips.
Green tea bags
Green tea is rich in antioxidants and tannins, which in turn helps heal and soothe dry and dehydrated lips. Dip a green tea bag in some hot water for a few minutes. Once cool, place this tea bag over your lips and leave it on for a few minutes. Wash with water and follow with a vitamin E enriched-lip balm. Do this once daily.
Other tips
Always remember that like your skin, your lips too need hydration. So, do not cut out on water, water-based fruits and vegetables.
Consider changing your lipstick as they might be one of the major culprits. While choosing a lipstick, always look for one with a creamy or sheer texture. Say no to matte lipsticks.
Before stepping out in the sun, protect your lips, just like you do for your skin, with some SPF. This small exercise can help prevent the sun’s harmful rays from drying your lips. It’s best to apply some shea butter as it is said to have SPF properties.
While exfoliating your lips with a honey and sugar scrub will make your lips softer and healthier, it is advisable to not to overdo it. Exfoliating once or at the most, twice a week should be enough.
