What Is Colour Therapy And How Can You Use It?
Colour is something we see everyday, from the clothes we pick out to wear in the morning to the magazines we read in an evening – but can colours really be the answer when it comes to healing? It seems that in ancient Indian medicine, colour therapy has long been used as a way to heal the mind and body, with surprising effects. The unique vibrations of colour could work to treat ailments and various cultures have adopted this method in ancient medicine, including Egyptians who had specific healing rooms where the sun dispersed various colours of the rainbow which was thought to have healing powers. Today, colour therapy is making a comeback as a holistic method for treating the ill. This treatment is known as chromotherapy.
So how does it work? The seven colours of the rainbow are associated with the seven chakra, or energy centres, in the body. The muladhara chakra, also known as the root chakra, is associated with the colour red and the cross centre or the swadisthana chakra is orange. Manipura, the navel centre, the anahata or heart centre, vishuddi or the throat centre, agya or third eye centre and the sahasrana or crown centre are yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet respectively. Each of these chakras is associated with a gland in the body, so healing them can improve the function of the glands in the body. The therapy works by drinking water that has been charged in coloured bottles or by breathing colour, which involves putting the required coloured bottle out in the sun for a few hours and then breathing in the air from inside it. You can also wear colours that are soothing to help calm your mood. This ancient art could prove to be an effective treatment for various ailments, including strengthening your circulation, boosting your mood and alleviating stress.
