Cowboy Tennis Falls To Oklahoma In Regular-Season Finale

The No. 29 Oklahoma State men’s tennis team was defeated by No. 2 Oklahoma, 6-1, at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday in the Cowboys’ final regular season match of the year.

OSU (20-6, 1-4 Big 12) opened the match with another win over a top-20 doubles opponent, as Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe took down 18th-ranked Webb/Harris. After falling behind, 4-2, the Cowboy duo rallied to win four consecutive games and eventually grab an 8-5 victory. However, OU’s Papac/Siributwong evened the doubles competition with an 8-3 win over Chris Haworth and Brady Bohrnstedt at No. 3.

With all eyes fixed on court two, the Cowboys found themselves within a point of taking the early advantage, as Lucas Gerch and Sebastian Sachs held a 7-6 tiebreaker lead. Oklahoma’s Guillermo Alcorta faulted on his first serve, and the Cowboys appeared to have won the doubles point after Alcorta sent his second serve a few inches long.

However, OU was given new life after the umpire ruled that Gerch was on the return box line during Alcorta’s serve. The call was reversed to a let, and the Sooners would go on to win the next three points and finish off Gerch/Sachs, 8-7(7).

The ruling proved to be a huge momentum shift, as Oklahoma won the first set on all six singles courts. The Cowboys put up a strong fight against the Sooners’ quartet of ranked singles standouts, but fell in straight sets at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, sealing the OU victory.

Despite falling victim to a 6-0 deficit and the contentious doubles decision, Sebastian Sachs rallied to record a 6-7(2), 6-3, 12-10 win over sixth-ranked Axel Alvarez Llamas, marking the Cowboys’ first win over a top-10 singles opponent in 2014. Oklahoma State also celebrated the final home match for seniors Brady Bohrnstedt, Matt Campbell, Trevor Horstmann and Brandon Champagne.

The Pokes finish the regular season with a 20-6 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the Big 12, leaving them in a three-way tie with Texas Tech and TCU for the No. 4 seed. The conference sport advisory committee will meet on Monday to confirm seeding for next week’s Big 12 Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
