Troopers believe a 17-year-old Port Orchard girl was under the influence of drugs when the car she was driving crashed Saturday in the Key Peninsula area, injuring herself and several others.
The girl was booked into Remann Hall Juvenile Detention Center Sunday morning on suspicion of vehicular assault and driving under the influence, trooper Guy Gill said.
The State Patrol does not release names of minors, and The News Tribune does not generally name suspects before they are formally charged with a crime.
None of the injuries from the crash were thought to be life-threatening, he said.
The two-door 2002 Saturn SL1 the girl was driving hit a 4-door 2013 Volkswagen Passat that was waiting to turn left about 5:30 p.m. from state Route 302 onto 118th Avenue Northwest.
Both of those vehicles were heading eastbound on SR 302. The crash pushed the Volkswagen into oncoming traffic, where it was hit by a westbound 2006 Hummer SUV.
Gill said troopers found marijuana and another substance in the Saturn that hadn’t yet been identified, and found signs of drug impairment when they evaluated the 17-year-old driver.
Gill said troopers were still investigating, and that blood test results from the teen should be back in a couple weeks.
A 19-year-old Olalla woman riding in the Saturn was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for her injuries, and a 15-year-old Lakebay boy went to Tacoma General Hospital. The 17-year-old went to St. Anthony’s Hospital, as did a 65-year-old Gig Harbor woman in the Hummer. After the 17-year-old went to the hospital, she was booked into Remann Hall about 5 a.m.
A 49-year-old driving the Volkswagen and his 49-year-old female passenger, both from Graham, were injured but weren’t taken to the hospital.
