MTSU women’s golf tees off in C-USA tourney Monday

 

 

The MTSU women’s golf team along with 12 other teams are set to tee off Monday as the 2014 Conference USA Championship gets underway at the Peninsula Golf Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.

 

The championship consists of 54 holes on a par 72, 6,145-yard course spanning three days, with the winning team receiving an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. This is the fourth-straight year that the tournament has been hosted at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club.

 

MTSU and Florida International are making their C-USA Championship debuts and tee off alongside Old Dominion at 7:50 a.m. The Blue Raiders finished second at the Sun Belt Conference Championship in each of the last three years.

 

In the Blue Raiders’ last outing this season, MTSU finished fourth at the 21st annual John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate March 30-April 1, carding a 907.

 

MTSU’s tournament roster this week includes Avery George, Allie Knight, Emily Williams, Maddie Denton, Emily Miller and Lacie York. George paces the Blue Raiders this season, posting a stroke average of 74.7 and recording four top-5 finishes. She won the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Oct. 7-8 with a score of 215 (75-67-73) for one-under par. At the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate, the sophomore totaled 227 (79-74-74) through 54 holes to finish 21st in the 90-player field.

 

Knight is second on the team this year for MTSU with a 76.1 stroke average for four-over par. She has posted two top-10 finishes, including one in the top-5. Knight recorded a low round of 72 in the final round at the UALR Classic March 24-25 to finish fourth with an overall score of 226, helping MT win the tournament. In her last outing, Knight tallied a 229 (78-73-78), finishing tied for 22nd at the John Kirk Intercollegiate.

 

Williams has a stroke average of 77.0 this season for MTSU for 5-over par. She turned in a career-low round of 67 in team’s last outing, helping MTSU tie its season-low round of 289. She also posted a season-low three round total of 225 at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate. Williams recorded her best finish of the season at the FedEx Memphis Intercollegiate Sept. 9-10 with a 13th place finish to help MT earn second-place honors.

 

MTSU’s most improved golfer this season, Denton, boasts a 77.8-stroke average for 6-over par. She proved to be the consistent Blue Raider in the team’s last tournament, shooting a 76 in the final set of 18 for a total of 226 (75-75-76) through the three-day tournament. She finished 20th at the John Kirk Panther tourney.

 

Miller returns to the MTSU lineup after battling injuries. She posts a stroke average of 77.1 for 5-over par with one top-10 finish. She turned in a low round of 73 twice this season. She earned a sixth-place finish at the FedEx Memphis tournament, helping MT to a second-place finish. Miller recorded a season-best 224 through 54 holes in Memphis and finished tied for 19th at the competitive Cardinal Cup in Louisville, Ky., Sept. 16-17, shooting 226 through three rounds.

 

York rounds out the C-USA tournament lineup for MTSU. She has a stroke average of 81.8 in 12 rounds of action. She turned in a low round of 73 at the Blue Raider Invitational Oct. 21-22. In her last outing, York tallied a 242 (87-76-79) at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate March 30-April 1.
