Westfield Area Y Flyers’ track season starts

 

 

Nineteen athletes from the Flyers Track Club were among the over 700 athletes that participated in the NJ Striders Track Meet at Saddle Brook High School on April 6.

 

The Flyers had 10 top-10 finishes and set four team records.

 

Below is a listing of all the athletes placed in the top ten in their events:

 

Girls Ages Under 8 Division: Theresa White placed eighth and set a new team record in the Turbo Javelin.

 

Girls Ages 9-10 Division: Abigail Granrath placed fifth in the 800m run.

 

Girls Ages 11-12 Division: Maddy Walters placed fifth and set a team record in the shotput.

 

Lauren Henkel placed fifth in the 800m race walk.

 

Boys Ages Under 8 Division: David Sanchez placed fifth and set a team record in to 200m dash and placed fifth in the 800m run.

 

Eamon Mason placed third in the 800m run.

 

Boys Ages 11-12 Division: Matthew Ackerman placed sixth in the Turbo Javelin

 

Paul Koizuni placed second in the 800m race walk.

 

The Westfield Area Y Flyers Track Club is a USATF certified club that has grown to train over 600 athletes in grades 2-8 throughout the year with programs in Westfield, Cranford and Mountainside. They offer two levels of participation — developmental and competitive.

 

The Flyers provides instruction and competition is events such as Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin, Sprints, Long Distance Running and Race Walking. They have sent more than 50 athletes to the National Junior Olympics and last season had three All-Americans including a National Champion.

The current Spring Track season lasts until May 16. The summer track season will begin May 28. The team will next compete at the NJ Striders Meet on April 27 in Paramus.
