Winter Park woman skydives for 88th birthday
A retired Winter Park school teacher celebrated her birthday 88th by jumping out of a plane on Sunday.
Janice Skelly is legally blind and hard of hearing, but she’s full of spirit.
As she’s getting fitted for her jumpsuit by her tandem jump partner Chris, a handsome Italian man who hails from Rome, Janice said, “Whoa, that’ll hold, it fits like a girdle!”
The inspiration for Janice’s octogenarian jump? President George H.W. Bush and his tandem jump in 2004 when he turned 80.
“My health wasn’t good enough; I couldn’t do it when I turned 80,” she said. So, I said I’ll do it when I turn 90. Now I’m getting scared as I get older that I might not make it to 90, so I thought I better do it now.”
After nearly 10 years of planning and getting in shape, Janice took the plunge from the blue skies all the way to the grassy land below, before landing safely.
“It was great… after the free fall,” Janice said.
After taking the leap, Janice said her next stop was uncorking a bottle of bubbly to celebrate.
Janice’s turns 88 on Monday.-
