SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Morningside downs Bellevue behind Steffen’s hit

SIOUX CITY | Kati Steffen’s walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Morningside College’s softball team a 5-4 win over Bellevue Monday afternoon at the Jensen Complex.

Coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann’s Mustangs were scheduled to play a doubleheader. However, because of rain, the second game was called with the score tied 1-all with no outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Morningside improved to 26-11 after its third straight victory. Winners of five of their last six games, the Mustangs are seeded first heading into Thursday’s 2 p.m. first-round Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament game against eighth-seeded Dordt (16-26) at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings, Neb.

Currently second in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 16-4 record, Bellevue (32-15) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to score single runs in each of the last four innings. Shelby Kindelin, who hit a two-out home run in the fifth inning, smacked her second round-tripper of the game and fourth of the season with two outs in the seventh.

Jordan Johnson singled to center field in Morningside’s home half of the seventh. Steffen then followed with her second hit of the game, doubling to right field.

Johnson’s 3-for-3 slate included a two-run double in the Mustangs’ four-run second inning. Teammates Morgan Fogelman and Taylor Daas contributed back-to-back RBI singles.

Johnson (17-3) yielded four hits, including Augusta Ratliff’s fourth inning home run. Johnson walked four and struck out nine.
