Roanoke County shopping center deals with 2nd ‘suspicious package’ scare in 4 days
A suspicious package found Tuesday inside the Hollins post office at Brookside Shopping Center in Roanoke County did not contain dangerous materials, police said.
It was the second suspicious package the Virginia State Police had dealt with in four days at Brookside Shopping Center. On Saturday, a package in front of the Golden Wok restaurant contained personal items, Roanoke County spokeswoman Amy Whittaker said.
Police do not believe there is a connection between the two packages, “but you have to take all of these seriously,” Whittaker said.
The package was reported at 3:47 p.m. A state police bomb squad led a canine into the building as a precaution, Whittaker said, and the squad’s investigation concluded that the package was not dangerous.
Whittaker did not have details on the contents of the package.
Police closed Williamson Road during the investigation and evacuated customers and employees from businesses in the shopping center. Residents of surrounding homes were not evacuated.
Williamson Road was reopened about 6:50 p.m., and the evacuation order on the plaza was lifted.
