Shooting sends stray bullets into North Lauderdale neighborhood
NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — Police are searching for two men in connection to a shooting that sent stray bullets into a South Florida neighborhood, placing two families in harm’s way.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating the shooting, which, they said, may have been the result of an altercation that began at a convenience store in North Lauderdale, Monday.
Surveillance cameras at the Quik Stop near the 7700 block of Southwest 10th Street captured the two men during the dispute, but not the actual shooting. According to deputies, the shooting happened a couple of blocks away in the residential neighborhood after the subjects followed two other men out of the store, at around 8 p.m.
BSO said the bullets were fired in a parking lot outside an apartment complex. Investigators said resident Derek Stovall, 42, was hit once in the forearm during the shooting.
A tenant at a nearby apartment said another bullet went through her front door, across the living room and through another door before landing under a bed in the children’s room. “I was sitting right here,” said 4-year-old Nathaniel Rodriguez, who was sitting in the living room at the time of the shooting. “But Dad was sitting right there, and Caleb was sitting right there, but they were starting shooting.”
The children’s mother, Daisy Perez, said she is thankful no one inside the home was hurt. “Thank God the kids weren’t walking to the kitchen or the dog was in the living room,” she said. “It could have resulted in one of them getting injured.”
“I was here, but we ran outside, and we saw the police,” Rodriguez continued.
Perez said she wants to feel safe in her home again and wants her children to be able to run and play without the fear of being shot. “It’s unsafe for the kids to even be outside anymore,” she said, “because you don’t know when the fight is escalating and is going to [end] in gunfire, unfortunately.”
Detectives have released a photo of the man they believe is the shooter. They said he was in a green, older model Ford Crown Victoria with large chrome rims. He was last seen wearing a jacket, ski hat and very baggy shorts. “Take a good, close look at the man in the ski cap,” said BSO spokesperson Dani Moschella. “We definitely need to get him identified. We need help from people who saw the shooting, who knew this man. Kids were almost killed in this situation.”
Detectives would also like to speak with another man seen in the video. He was wearing a white T-shirt with black decorative markings and long dark shorts.
