‘Beauty and the Beast’ to the rescue

IPOH: THE St Micheal Institution and SK La Salle’s school maintenance fund received a RM100,000 boost following the successful staging of Beauty and the Beast, recently.

The play, held over three nights, was the work of 60 of secondary school students.
Old Michaelians’ Association president Adrian Tsen said the money would be used for repairs on the school building, some minor painting and changing of the schools roof-tiles.

“We also need to service the air conditioners in our school hall and renovate the laboratory and library. Every year, we spend about RM130,000 to maintain both schools,” said Tsen, adding that the 100-year-old SMI required constant maintenance works.

SMI principal Low Wei Seng said apart from raising funds, the staging of the play also instilled unity and teamwork among the students.

“It also provides a platform for our students to showcase their talent in the performing arts,” he said.

“Our students have successfully staged a number of Walt Disney productions, namely The Lion King last year, Camelot in 2008, Hercules in 2007 and Mulan under the directorship of Corrine Mah in 2005,” he added.

The school, said Low, chose to stage Beauty and the Beast this year as it carried the message of moral values and love for the family and community.
