Jessica Mounts, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism fisheries biologist, said the first few minutes of the event will be held inside the Great Plains Nature Center. After that the class will walk to the nearby Island Pond for hands-on education. The event, the first of four this summer, runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
“We’ll spend a lot of one-on-one time answering specific questions, helping people with their equipment, teaching them how to ID their fish,” Mounts said. “We’ll be giving advice on what tackle they might want to purchase and how to use what they have.”
She said participants can bring their own gear or use the department’s.
The main thing she wants people to bring, she said, are several generations of the same family. This is the fourth year for the program.
“Some (who attend) are parents who want to take their families fishing, and we’ve had grandparents who come with their grandchildren because they want to learn how to take them fishing,” Mounts said. “Often someone brings their kids because their kids have shown an interest in fishing and (the parents) don’t know much about it.
“I feel strongly that having the parents involved with the kids provides a much greater chance they’ll all go fishing on their own after the event.”
Mounts said similar events will be held in June, July and August.
