Captain Rick Killgore out of Islamorada reported tarpon fishing has been outstanding for his customers. The tarpon are located around the bridges, in the channels and over some of the shallow flats not far from Islamorada. The tarpon are eating live mullet and crabs and have averaged 70 to more than 100 pounds. There has also been quite a few spinner sharks hooked that have added to the action.
MIAMI-DADE/BROWARD
During a recent 12-hour fishing trip offshore of Haulover Inlet the customers of the Atlantis party boat out of Haulover Marina enjoyed a great day catching plenty of kingfish, amberjacks, barracuda, gag groupers and vermillion snappers. Captain Jamie Owens was the skipper on this special trip. … Fishing with guide Jorge Valverde of Low Places Guide Service Vice President of O. Mustad & Son Americas, Magnus Gunnarsson of Miami caught his first bonefish, a 7.5 pound fish that ate a large live shrimp in South Biscayne Bay. … Marvin Davidson of Weston, Rick Fieretag of Hutchinson Island and Barry Katzen of Coral Gables fished out of Bimini with captain Steve Aramant of Davie. During two days they raised two blue marlins trolling and caught caught yelloweye snappers, yellowtail snappers, and cobia and cero mackerel.
KEYS
Islamorada.com reported small blackfin tuna are going for red and black feathers trolled around the Humps. Snappers and groupers are biting on the reefs. Dolphins have been far offshore but with an easterly wind predicted for this weekend expect the dolphins to move closer to the reef. A few sailfish and some kingfish have been caught just outside the reef. … Captain Chris Johnson on the charter boat Sea Squared out of Marathon reported he has been mixing it up during recent charters taking advantage of the hot tarpon bite that has been happening along the Keys bridges and then fishing bottom for mutton snappers and then ending the day by targeting a variety of large sharks on the shallow flats north of Marathon.
TREASURE COAST
Nedra Maxwell with the Sebastian Inlet District reported fishing has slowed on the jetties recently with the west winds. When the winds have been out of the east Spanish mackerel, bluefish, snook, redfish and black drum have been biting. The best bait has been shinny spoons and live shrimp. Over the inside flats large sea trout to 30 inches are being caught on soft plastics, mullet and shrimp.
FLORIDA BAY
Captain Jim Hobales of Caught Lookin Charters reported working the grass flats and channel edges in Florida Bay with live shrimp and soft plastics his clients have had a field day catching mangrove snappers to 13 inches, loads of ladyfish and plenty of jacks and small sea trout. Fishing with chunks of ladyfish in depths from two to four feet of water his clients hooked up on tarpon to 80 pounds, large lemon and bull sharks and a few redfish and snook.
SOUTHWEST COAST
Captain John Fetter of Catching the Cure Fishing Charters out of Fort Myers reported the inshore fishing recently was tough. Working the offshore waters near shore with cut ladyfish and threadfin herring is producing lots of action from a variety of sharks. Fishing cut ladyfish around the oyster bars has produced a few nice redfish.
FRESHWATER
Captain Pat Steven from Slim’s Fishing Camp in Belle Glade reported the largemouth bass fishing continues to be excellent on Lake Okeechobee. The largemouth bass are being caught along the outside pepper grass line. Best baits have been a black and blue flaked soft plastic fished on the bottom and white swim baits fished near the surface. Speckled perch continue to feed in the Rim canal. Best baits for the speck’s has been minnows and jigs. Plenty of shellcrackers and bluegills are being caught all around the Lake. The panfish have been eating live worms, crickets and grass shrimp. Catfish are being caught on the bottom on live worms.
