Honor Roll: Local standouts in college softball, baseball playoffs
World Series bound
Junior College — The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers are headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association World Series in softball.
SMU beat Pitt Community College, 5-2, last Sunday to complete a sweep through the Region 10 Tournament to claim the automatic berth. The softball series will be played in St. Georges, Utah, May 14-17.
Freshman pitcher Emily Kale, a Crest High graduate, threw four innings against Pitt to gain the win in the regional finale.
Spartanburg Methodist will enter the NJCAA World Series with a 36-12 record and riding a 14-game win streak.
Regional action
Cherryville native Taylor Laskey at Wingate hopes to see her Bulldog squad earn a trek to the National Division II Tournament. Wingate (36-18) and Laskey play Lenoir-Rhyne (39-13) in the regionals at North Georgia.
Friday at 4 p.m.
Laskey is hitting .354 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs in 54 games (54 starts.
CVCC top-seeded
The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team is seeded No. 1 and plays No. 8 Surry CC in the first round of the Region X/Southeast District tournament Friday at 7 p.m.
The double elimination tournament determines the region’s representative to the NJCAA World Series in Enid, Okla.
The Bucs (22-6) are currently ranked 16th in the nation among junior college squads. Cleveland County players on the roster include pitchers Dustin Greene, Phillip Black and Dallas Conner.
