The event is hosted by the Penang Body Builders Association (PBBA) with the cooperation of the state government, state sports council and Sunway Hotel.

Organising chairman Andy Fong said bodybuilders from 23 affiliates of PBBA will participate in 11 categories which will climax in the Champion of the Champions contest for the ultimate Mr Penang 2014 title.

Fong said the categories are the junior (Under- 21, with body weight below 70kg and above 70kg), masters (above 45 years), light flyweight (below 55kg), flyweight (55kg), bantamweight (60kg), lightweight (65kg), welterweight (70kg), light middleweight (75kg), middleweight (80kg), light heavyweight (90kg) and heavyweight (above 90kg).

Pre-judging will start at 8am while the finals will start at 7.30pm.

PBBA president Datuk Ong Poh Eng said qualified bodybuilders would be selected to represent the state at the Mr Malaysia Body Building Championship 2014 at Putrajaya from June 6 to 8.

“Bodybuilding has become a popular sport since the Sports Ministry and National Sports Council included it as a competition event at the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

“The respective state sports councils have provided allocations for the development of the sport which is good for the growth of bodybuilding,” said Ong who is also the Malaysian Weightlifters Association president at a press conference recently.

Present were the State Youth and Sport, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Chong Eng, state sports council director Frederick Tan Teck An and Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya general manager Ben Ho Chang Peng.

Ong, who is also the state sports council deputy chairman, said many dormant state associations were revived to compete in the games.

These associations also receive financial aid from the state sports council. By K. Kandiah
