BATTLE GROUND, Wash. — A man who fired a gun to scare off an intruder found out soon afterward that his granddaughter had actually invited several friends over for a party at his house.

Police were called just before 1 a.m. to the report of shots fired inside the home in the 17400 block of Northeast 280th Street.

Arriving deputies spoke with 67-year-old homeowner Billy Bicknell, who said he had grabbed his shotgun when he heard what he thought was an intruder, according to Sgt. Fred M. Neiman of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Bicknell then fired a round to scare someone who was already jumping out the window, Neiman said.

“In the subsequent investigation, deputies learned that Bicknell’s 15-year-old granddaughter, who resides with him, had invited several other teenagers into the home,” Neiman said. “The youths began to flee the residence, jumping out of an upper story window when they heard Bicknell approach.”

One of teens was unaccounted for during the initial investigation and a major crimes team was called to search with the help of a K-9 unit. He was found elsewhere several hours later.

No serious injuries were reported.

Bicknell was jailed on one count of first-degree assault.
