Members of the Newport Rowing Club will represent their high schools for the first time Friday and Saturday when they participate in Stotesbury Cup Regatta, known as the world’s largest competition for high school rowers.

The regatta, a Philadelphia institution since 1927, now features 31 events and attracts about 5,000 athletes from across the nation.

Two Newport rowers will race in singles events, Julia Baumel of Kennett High School and Mike Glaude of Salesianum School.

Sisters Tara Carr and Rose Carr, from Conrad School of Science, will row as a doubles team.

Padua Academy will field a pair of fours with rowers Marguerite Beane, Giana Buoni, Kaitlyn Barry, Erin Schuessler, Teresa Crosby, Gwen Miller, Paige Murdock, Erin Moretti, Molly Bobjak and Maggie Cunningham.

Salesianum also will enter a senior four with two alternates with Sam Watson, Joe Stockburger, Liam Webb, Mike Suter, Connor Horvath, Colin Suter and Owen Hynes.

Summer camps

Summer rowing camps at the Newport Rowing Club have something for everyone. Campers ages 12 through high school will learn to row with others at their level. Instruction includes all the fundamentals of rowing – basic technique, on-the-water skills, the language of rowing and more. Rowers from the club’s Junior Competitive Rowing program lead fun rowing activities.

Summer Camp is a “Summer Rowing Experience” for young athletes who live in the greater Wilmington area and southeastern Pennsylvania.

One-week camp sessions begin June 16, June 23, July 7 and July 14. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Details and online registration are available at newportrowingclub.org. Any questions about the camp, contact newportrowingclub@gmail.com.
