Ga. health department reviewing leadership choice
ATLANTA — The state Department of Public Health is reviewing its decision to hire a regional director who’s been linked to sermons criticizing people based on religion and sexual orientation.
Former Pasadena, California public health director Eric Walsh was offered a leadership position in north Georgia after being put on administrative leave in California earlier this month. Videos of Walsh, who is also a pastor, surfaced online and featured him blasting homosexuals and people from other religious backgrounds.
Department of Public Health spokesman Ryan Deal tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Walsh was sent an offer letter, but the offer hinges on a background check — which may include videos of the sermons.
Walsh has apologized in a statement, but activists are calling for the department to appoint someone else to the position.
