WALK: A York-Adams guide to this week’s District 3 playoff action

Go to Source

The last seven days made up one of the busiest weeks in local high school sports that I can recall in recent memory.

York County sports fans had to keep up with York-Adams League tournaments in baseball, softball and boys’ volleyball, along with nine teams in District 3 action for boys’ and girls’ lacrosse and three boys’ volleyball teams competing in opening-round (essentially play-in) games.

The next seven days might turn out to be even busier and take us to places beyond York County. The District 3 tournaments get started for baseball and softball and continue for girls’ and boys’ lacrosse and boys’ volleyball. In all, a total of 24 teams from the York-Adams League will be in action this week across all of the tournaments.

To make it a little easier for fans to keep track of everything, below is a brief look ahead on what to watch for in the coming days.

Boys’ volleyball: Easily the strongest spring sport in York County, boys’ volleyball saw a battle between a pair of heavyweights last Tuesday, with Central York beating Northeastern to capture the league title.

The clubs are two of the strongest teams in the state and will look to do some damage in district play. Central will compete at the Class AAA level while Northeastern is on the AA side with York Suburban and Susquehannock. All four will be in quarterfinal round district action Monday. Northeastern is the defending District 3-AA and PIAA AA champ.

Baseball: The York-Adams baseball scene features a pair of defending District 3 champs (York Catholic and Delone Catholic) and a two-time defending state champ (West York).

West York has finished third in districts the last two years before going on to win state titles. The Bulldogs have made a pair of appearances in the district title game (2003, 2010) before, but have yet to win it. They’ll begin the quest to do so Monday in the first round of districts, alongside eight other York-Adams teams. In AAAA will be league tournament champ Spring Grove and Division I runner-up Central York. In AAA is league tournament runner-up and Division III champ Susquehannock, Division II champ West York, Division II runner-up Northeastern and Division III runner-up Eastern York. In AA will be Division IV champ Delone Catholic and Biglerville, while York Catholic will compete in Class A.

Softball: After winning the York-Adams tournament last week, Dallastown is now aiming to get to the district title game for the second time in three years.

The Wildcats got there in 2012 after beating Central York in the district semis. Those clubs shared this year’s Division I crown and could meet again in the district semis this month if they both win their first two District 3-AAAA games this week. Central faces Red Lion in the opening round. South Western is also competing at the AAAA level. In Class AAA, league runner-up and Division II champ Susquehannock, Division II runner-up Dover, Division III champ Kennard-Dale and Division III runner-up West York will be in action. In AA will be Division IV champ Delone and Littlestown.

All will compete in first-round action Tuesday, except Delone, which has a first-round bye and will play in the second round Thursday.

Lacrosse: Kennard-Dale girls’ lacrosse is the lone York-Adams team remaining in District 3 play. And the York-Adams runner-up has arguably the toughest matchup of any league member in postseason play this week when the Rams face Manheim Twp. in the district semis Tuesday at Hershey High.

Manheim Twp. has yet to lose a district game since the tournament started in 2009. K-D reached the district title game for the first time in program history last year but lost to Manheim Twp., 14-10.
