The Causes of Weak and Strong bones
Whilst there is an assumption amongst many people, that calcium is essential to strong and healthy bones, the reality is not quite as clear-cut. Recent studies in the United States have concluded that an excessive consumption of milk and dairy products can actually make bones weaker and more vulnerable to fractures and cancer.
This is mostly caused by the acidifying effect that dairy products can have on the body, and when the body is saturated with acidic-properties, calcium is extracted from the bones in order to lessen the impact of the acids. In addition to adding unwanted acids to the body, drinking too much milk can make bones brittle, and more susceptible to conditions such as femur fractions. Whilst drugs can be used to strengthen bones, they can increase the risk of pancreatic-cancer-onset.
In order to maintain healthy bones, we need to eat a range of foods which contain the minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are necessary in enhancing and strengthening bone-structures. These include foodstuffs such as: seeds, nuts, leafy vegetables and beans. Many of these are a natural source of zinc that can help to promote bone-building activity and how the body creates it; and according to recent studies, taking zinc in a supplement form, can enhance these processes further.
Vitamin K is also important in maintaining healthy bones, as it can prevent calcium deposits from invading arterial walls and can therefore be used by the body to maintain bone health. Vitamin D is also highly beneficial for bone-health and can boost joint and hip agility by increasing muscle-strength. For older people, extracts from the olive leaf can minimise the risk of developing osteoporosis, which can impose significant restrictions to body-flexibility and mobility.
So, whilst drinking milk can be very good for you, it can, like many things have a detrimental effect on your health if it’s consumed excessively.
