Despite missing seven runners, the Storm Lake 7th grade boys track and field captured the Big Five title at Sheldon on Friday. Coming in behind Storm Lake’s 111 points was Cherokee and Le Mars tying with 87, followed by Sheldon with 51 and South O’Brien with 18 points.
Dustin Ebel finished with two individual first-places in the shot put and discus and two team first-places in the 4 x 200 relay and the 4 x 100 relay. In the shot put, Ebel threw a 38′ 1/2″. He threw a new school record in the discus with 116′. Manny Chavez also finished in first-place in the 100 dash with a time of 12.71.
The team of Ebel, Logan Norwood, Peter Peter and Chavez finished the 4 x 200 relay in a time of 1:56.23. Peter, Norwood, Ebel and Chavez ran a 54.18 in the 4 X 100 relay.
Other top finishers for the Tornadoes: Chavez in the high jump with a leap of 4′ 4 for second-place. Right behind him was Malga Vanga in third-place with a jump of 4′ 2″. Norwood finished second in the long jump with a leap of 14′ 3″. Kail Shannon also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 31′ 4″. Second-place in the discus throw was Cham Deng with a toss of 98′.
The 4 x 800 team of Lucas Nicholson, Adam Mendoza, Carlos Munoz and Milton Duarte finished second with a time 11:33.16.
In the 1600 run Nicholson finished third with a time of 6:10.21. In the 200 meter hurdles Xeng Vang finished second with a time of 32.32. The 4 x 400 relay team of Jose Santella, Vang, Vanga and Bradley Brown finished 3rd in 4:49.89.
The 1600 medley team of Munoz, Chris Ramos, Santella and Brown came in fourth. And Duarte finished fifth in the 400 dash with a time of 1:16.82.
